First Local Case of Monkeypox Reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Peshawar – Health authorities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) have confirmed the first locally transmitted case of monkeypox in the province. The patient, whose identity is being kept confidential, reportedly showed symptoms consistent with the viral disease and is currently receiving medical care under strict isolation protocols.
Officials from the KP Health Department emphasized that the case is being thoroughly investigated to identify any close contacts and prevent further spread. Vaccination and awareness campaigns are being rolled out in the affected area to educate the public about the signs, symptoms, and preventive measures associated with monkeypox.
“Early detection and isolation are key to controlling outbreaks. We are closely monitoring the situation and urging the public to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as fever, rash, or swollen lymph nodes,” said a senior health official. Authorities have also instructed hospitals and clinics across the province to remain vigilant and report any suspected cases.
Monkeypox, a rare viral disease similar to smallpox, is primarily transmitted through close contact with an infected person or contaminated materials. While human-to-human transmission is less common, health experts stress the importance of hygiene, avoiding close contact with symptomatic individuals, and timely vaccination for high-risk populations.
The KP government has activated emergency response teams and is coordinating with the federal Ministry of Health to prevent an outbreak. Public health messaging, contact tracing, and targeted vaccination campaigns are central to the ongoing containment strategy.
