Pakistan Will Not Allow India to Unilaterally Suspend IWT, Says PM Shehbaz

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has firmly stated that Pakistan will not permit India to unilaterally suspend the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT). Speaking at a press briefing, he emphasized the importance of upholding international agreements and protecting Pakistan’s water rights.

The PM highlighted that any unilateral action by India could have serious implications for agriculture, energy generation, and water security in Pakistan. He reaffirmed the country’s commitment to legal and diplomatic channels to resolve disputes while safeguarding national interests.

Experts note that the Indus Waters Treaty, brokered in 1960, has been a cornerstone of water-sharing between the two countries. Pakistan’s stance underscores the significance of multilateral frameworks and dialogue to prevent conflicts over critical natural resources.

The Prime Minister also urged international stakeholders to recognize the treaty’s importance and encourage cooperation for regional stability and sustainable water management.
