Punjab Issues Lumpy Skin Disease Alert Ahead of Eid-ul-Azha
Lahore – The Punjab Livestock and Dairy Development Department has issued an urgent alert warning farmers and livestock owners about the risk of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) ahead of Eid-ul-Azha. The viral disease, which affects cattle, can lead to severe health issues in livestock and significant economic losses if not promptly managed.
Officials explained that LSD is highly contagious among cattle, causing fever, skin nodules, reduced milk production, and, in severe cases, death. With the upcoming Eid celebrations increasing the movement and trade of animals, authorities have urged farmers to remain vigilant, follow vaccination protocols, and report any suspected cases immediately.
“The safety and health of livestock are critical, especially during Eid-ul-Azha when demand for sacrificial animals rises,” said a senior veterinary officer. “We are actively monitoring outbreaks and providing guidance on preventive measures, including vaccination, quarantine, and hygiene practices in animal markets.”
The alert also encourages traders, butchers, and buyers to inspect animals carefully before purchase, avoid overcrowding in markets, and maintain proper sanitation to prevent disease spread. Livestock experts emphasized that early detection and adherence to veterinary guidelines are key to controlling LSD outbreaks and protecting both animal welfare and farmers’ livelihoods.
Provincial authorities are coordinating with district veterinary offices to deploy rapid response teams, distribute vaccines, and educate farmers on identifying early signs of the disease. Public awareness campaigns through media and social platforms are also underway to ensure timely action.
